It was mid of January 2020 when I finally walked upto the top of Thatharna. Thatharna hill which was just standing in front of my residence and my morning walk routine was to walk upto Tunna’s cafe, sometimes just little beyond the cafe where a some shops and cafeteria owned by local gram panchayat is situated. It was daily routine before I used to start my day. When I used to start walking up, it was a different kind of feeling of challange that I received from Thatharna. It was like, you know , that Thatharna was challanging me and asking me , like, if I had guts come and climb me upto the top. Although, visiting Kharota was a part of weekly routines but there was strong feeling to climbing up Thatharna. Travelling upto Kharota in my car and , staying there for some time, then having a plate of maggie and hot tea had really heavenly feeling while staying in that particular area of Dharamshala. I planned with many people to accompany me to trek this beautiful hill but finally none was ready to go on scheduled day.
So on one fine morning after coming back from morning walk I finally decided to trek Thatharna and it was the great morning of 19th January 2020 when I could make up my mind finally and hit my long pending target. After coming back from morning walk I took bath, took my wind-cheater and with small other items in my small back-pack I also packed 4 aloo-paranthas and pushed to kharota in my car and then further after parking my car there my journey started towards Thatharana . Let me explain a bit about this beautiful place Thatharna to you .
Tharna Trek is a trek in Himachal Pradesh which is not much publicized amongst the tourists who visit Dharamshala . This is a hill where one can have 360 degrees brilliant view of Kangra valley and thrilling route, It is one of the less explored trek in Dhauladhars. If you are someone with little hatred for Thatharna trek is one of the best suited trek for you which happened with me too.
It is a 5km trek only but one should not take the distance lightly because the trek is a bit tiring as the path is really not very well developed like other surrounding treks so it will take you around 3 to 5 hours to reach depending upon your stamina and capacity. Although despite at many places the path was completely washed away still I managed to reach the top in 3 hours. On the way I met three young boys belonging to nearby areas whom I helped in climbing up at many places where there was no trek at all , but even then they left back very soon when the thunder-showers started.
The intensity would be moderate, it’s not very difficult but wouldn’t be justified if said it’s a piece of cake. Well, it is truly said that the best views come after the hardest climb.
The climb starts through the village whereas it soon leads you to the forest. While on the trek, you will be in the forest most of the time and you will not find even a small tea-shop anywhere because the area is un-inhabited and not commercially well explored. I while crawling through the forest eagerly waited to reach the top but soon after I climbed for about one hour heavy thunder showers with snow started and many times, an idea of returning back flashed across my mind as it was all dark with heavy rains and snowing and I was all alone on such a rarely traveled unknown path.
Many a times an idea of attack by wild animals also traveled across my mind but after every few seconds I made myself stronger as I started enjoying the snow while travelling through a thick dark forest. After every moment of fear I found myself becoming integral part of the situation and circumstances which I started enjoying. . The mountains will catch your eye in between the climb from peepholes through dark jungle and that motivated me to reach the top sooner because I knew that the best thing that I am going to see from there only.
Before sharing further in next part of this article let me share few pics that I took during my travel.
